Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves the use of a device with fine needles to create tiny, controlled injuries on the skin's surface. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is designed to stimulate the body's natural healing processes, promoting the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins for maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin.
In general, microneedling is safe when done by a qualified skincare provider. Although there are needles involved, it is a minimally invasive procedure and doesn’t require much downtime. Microneedling is safe for people in overall good health, but it can be dangerous for women who are pregnant or people taking certain types of acne medicine. Too much microneedling can cause issues with the skin, so most experts recommend only getting a microneedling procedure once a month. There are DIY options available, but those should only be done if the product is approved by a dermatologist to make sure it is safe and the proper treatment for your skin condition.
After microneedling, most people notice their skin looks luminous and plump for a few weeks, with full results happening after about a month. With more procedures comes increasingly improved results and an increase in collagen and elastin in the skin for months after treatment.
For the first 24-48 hours after a treatment, most people experience redness and sensitivity. Some people may experience bruising or bleeding. Most people report seeing a fairly quick reaction to microneedling with their skin starting to improve soon after the procedure.
Microneedling has proven effective on several skin issues, including fine lines, acne scars, sagging skin, sun damage, stretch marks, large pores, and rough skin texture. The Skinstylus Microneedling device is FDA approved to treat the face and stomach. Neck and Decolletage are also very common treatment areas.
Microneedling does involve needles, but the pain level varies depending on each person’s pain tolerance. Most people tolerate it very well while some will call microneedling “uncomfortable” but not “painful” and compare it to the discomfort of someone rubbing sandpaper on your face. Some treatments are more intense than others and may cause more pain. However, the needles are so small that the pain is usually fairly mild. Because some areas of the skin are thinner, such as around the eyes or mouth, those areas may be more sensitive to the pain. Microneedling is a fairly quick process, so the pain is limited and doesn’t last for long. With the topical numbing cream we use most patients are very comfortable during the entire procedure.
Microneedling is safe for all skin types and colors, no matter your race or type of skin. Microneedling can also be done on all areas of the body, including the face, neck, arms, legs, and other areas.
The only people who shouldn’t try microneedling are women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and people who have open wounds, have had recent radiation treatment, have a current skin infection, or have used the acne medicine Accutane in the last six months. We also recommend getting active inflamed cystic acne under control before doing Microneedling services.
The cost per treatment varies depending on the location, the size of the treatment area, and if any advanced modalities are added on. On average, microneedling costs $200-$500. This cost is significantly lower than many other skin treatment that produce similar results. Doing a Microneedling package is also a great way to save on cost per treatment.
You’ll likely start to see some results after one treatment, but most patients require between four and six microneedling treatments, typically spaced about four to six weeks apart. Each treatment will improve the overall look of the skin and the skin condition. The number and frequency of the treatments is based on the severity of the condition, the sensitivity of the patient’s skin, and the age and overall health of the patient. Conditions like acne scars and stretch marks, which tend to go deeper into the skin, may require more treatments to see optimal results.
